Double-fretted Clavichord after Hubert, 1789
C.G. Hubert (1714-1793), was a well-known clavichordmaker from the court of Ansbach. His surviving instruments are extremely detailed and well designed. In particular, Hubert's popular double-fretted model represents perhaps the last word on the tonal possibilities the clavichord has to offer. This instrument incorporates fine tone with a very quiet action and is capable of great dynamic nuance. The solid cherry case of my Hubert double-fretted clavichord has exposed dovetails, hand-planed moldings, a boxwood keyboard with ebony sharps, and detachable tapered legs. Many purely decorative options are also available, including a special two-piece lid with folding music desk (photo), carved fanfolded keytails, a reverse keyboard of ebony with bone-slipped sharps (photo), Hubert's elegant fishbone pattern veneer, a period table stand, and a frame-and-panel lid. The standard range for this model is 56 notes C-g''' with a' = 415 Hz.
